Leasehold Reforms - The Latest from the King's Speech

We have seen the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rents) Act 2022 come into force, restricting ground rents in new long leases (unless excepted) to a peppercorn rent. But what of the other leasehold reforms we have been hearing of that seem to be making slow progress?

 

Within the King's Speech on 7 November 2023, King Charles III addressed the proposed reforms, saying:

 

"My Ministers will bring forward a bill to reform the housing market by making it cheaper and easier for leaseholders to purchase their freehold…."

ICO reprimands Nottinghamshire County Council for failure to redact sensitive information

Recently, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) announced its decision to reprimand Nottinghamshire County Council (the Council), for failure to redact sensitive information held within a Child and Family Assessment report, which are used to assess the needs of vulnerable children in situations where there are concerns about the ability of parents/ guardians to meet those needs.

Minimum wage rates increase announced from 1st April 2024

 

From 1st April 2024, the National Living Wage age threshold will be lowered to 21 (previously this applied to all workers aged 23 and over) and will rise from £10.42 to £11.44 per hour. There will be a £1.11 increase in the National Minimum Wage for 18-20 year olds to £8.60 per hour, and a £1.12 increase in the National Minimum Wage rate for both 16-17 year olds and the apprentice rate to £6.40 per hour.

RSH outlines most significant data and cyber security risks in Sector Risk Profile 2023

On 14 October 2023, the Regulator for Social Housing (RSH) published its annual Sector Risk Profile report (the Report), detailing its view of the most significant risks preventing registered providers (RPs) from achieving compliance with the RSH regulatory standards. RSH's publication statement reminds RPs of the need to prepare themselves for a new era of increased consumer regulation, following the introduction of the Social Housing (Regulation) Act.
